I read it You don’t have to make the same mistake Please keep out of the Fog :) The nostalgia doesn’t make it worth your hours. I feel like it’s my fault for falling for it so maybe I won’t bother returning it. This time through I’ve got about 45 minutes to go and I’ve decided I’m going to drag myself to the end just to prove I can do it this time. even as a 14 year old boy I had run out of patience with it. The whole thing is kinda soulless and depressing. Basically overall it’s difficult to care about survival of the human race. The overall sexist vibe is like a 1970’s episode of the Sweeney and It’s very difficult to feel any affection or empathy for its ‘hero’. including foreign folk and (obviously) weedy female voices. And then it’s old fashioned in the way women are written. Overall it’s shocking without intelligence or any subtlety. I can see why I liked it as a teenager but these sections now feel creepily old-fashioned. The reading is good in an old-fashioned over-acted way. but they are rare and not really worth the effort. and how old fashioned and actually kind of dull it is.

and then you gradually realise how badly written it is. and school And it’s shocking and good fun. all the little set-piece stories you remember. And it sort of is for the first 30 minutes. for nostalgic reasons I decided to revisit it.

everyone in my class read it under the covers. I read the Rats and this and I really liked it. in common with every other 14 year old boy I read this book (I thought) in 1977 maybe.
